How we score homestays: methodology

What this page covers

Malaysia Homestay Guide is a directory of 1,063 homestay businesses across Malaysia, published by Meridian Guides. Every listing gets a composite score from 0 to 100, built entirely from measured signals in public customer reviews and business data. No business can buy a higher score. This page explains exactly how that number is built, what it means for you as a traveler, and where its limits are.

The five signals, heaviest first

The composite score blends five weighted signals. We list them from heaviest to lightest because the order tells you what we think matters most when you're choosing where to stay.

SignalWeightWhat it measures
Sentiment28%A synthesis of recent review themes: what guests praise and what they complain about
Rating26%The Google aggregate star rating
Volume20%How many reviews exist, log-scaled so ten reviews don't count the same as five hundred
Recency15%How recently guests have actually reviewed the place
Completeness11%Whether phone, website, hours and address are all listed and accurate

Why sentiment carries the most weight

A star average hides patterns. Two homestays can sit at the exact same 4.3 stars, and still be very different stays: one has scattered, varied feedback, and the other has a string of recent reviews all naming the same problem, say, aircon that doesn't work, a host who's unreachable at check-in, or a listing photo that doesn't match the property. The average number alone won't show you that. Reading what recent reviews actually say, and weighing repeated, specific complaints more heavily than one-off gripes, is the only way to catch it before you book. That's why sentiment is weighted above the star rating itself, not instead of it.

Why the other signals matter

Rating is still the single biggest snapshot of guest satisfaction, which is why it's second. Volume matters because a 5.0 average from three reviews tells you almost nothing, while a 4.6 from four hundred tells you a lot, so we log-scale it rather than let raw review counts swamp everything else. Recency matters because homestays change hands, get renovated, or slide in upkeep, and a glowing review from 2021 says little about who's running the place today. Completeness matters in a smaller but real way: a listing with a working phone number, current hours and a real address is easier to actually book and reach, and its absence often correlates with a less actively managed business.

Confidence labels and honest limits

Some businesses in this directory simply don't have much recent review activity. When that's the case, we say so: listings built on a small or stale pool of reviews are marked as low-confidence scores, right on the page, rather than presented with false precision. We also don't republish review text wholesale. What you read on a listing page is our synthesis of the themes in recent reviews, and we link out to the original Google source so you can read guests' own words in full before you decide.

Scores are earned, not sold

Every score on this site comes from the rubric above and public data only. It is never edited by hand to move a business up or down. Where paid placement exists on the site, it is always labelled clearly as sponsored and it never touches the score itself. If any list on this site, such as our best villa homestays roundup, has picks or ordering that involved editorial judgment rather than the score alone, that is disclosed on the page itself, not buried.

Who's behind this

Malaysia Homestay Guide is published by Meridian Guides, which has run independent city directories for homestay services across Malaysia since 2025. Rankings run on a published scoring method built on public customer reviews, with no payment ever changing where a business lands. Sponsored placements are always labelled as such. Editorial oversight of the rankings sits with Janice, Editor. Data is refreshed on a monthly cycle across the directory, and each listing carries its own "last verified" stamp so you can see that it's being actively maintained rather than left to go stale. You can find the full directory on our home page, learn more about the publisher at meridianguides.my, or reach the team directly at hello@meridianguides.my.

FAQ

Can a homestay pay to raise its score?
No. The composite score comes only from the five weighted signals in this methodology: sentiment, rating, volume, recency and completeness. Paid placement, where it exists on the site, is always labelled as sponsored and never changes a listing's score.
Why does sentiment count more than the star rating?
Because a star average can hide patterns that matter to you. Two homestays can share the same rating while one has a run of recent reviews all naming the same specific problem. Reading what reviews actually say catches that; the average alone doesn't.
What does a low-confidence score mean?
It means the business doesn't yet have enough recent reviews for us to be fully confident in its score. We label these listings clearly rather than showing a number with more certainty than the data supports.
How often is the data updated?
The directory refreshes on a monthly cycle, and each listing shows its own last-verified date so you can see when it was last checked, on top of the monthly refresh.
