About this directory

What this is

Malaysia Homestay Guide is an independent directory covering 1,063 homestay businesses across Malaysia. It’s built for travellers comparing homestays by area, price range, and guest sentiment, without wading through dozens of tabs of scattered reviews. Each listing brings together public business details and a synthesis of recent Google reviews in one place, so you can compare options quickly and then decide where to book.

Malaysia Homestay Guide is published by Meridian Guides, which has run independent city directories for homestay services across Malaysia since 2025. Every listing is scored using the same published method, applied the same way whether a business pays us anything or not. Sponsorship, where it exists, is labelled and kept separate from that score. You can reach the publisher at hello@meridianguides.my, or read more at meridianguides.my.

Where the data comes from

Listings draw on public business information plus a synthesis of recent Google reviews: patterns in what guests mention, not lifted review text. We don’t republish anyone’s words. Where you want the original source, each listing links out to the business’s Google reviews so you can read them yourself.

How ranking works

Rankings come from a published rubric applied to that public data and review synthesis, nothing else. No listed business can pay to move up, and no advertising spend touches a score. The full rubric, including how factors are weighted, is laid out on our /methodology/ page. Janice, our editor, maintains the rankings and oversees how the rubric gets applied across all 1,063 listings.

A business owner can flag and correct factual details on their own listing (opening hours, address, amenities, and the like). What they cannot do is edit their own score, the sentiment summary, or their position relative to other homestays. That stays independent of the business by design.

Sponsorship and enquiries

Some listings carry a sponsored placement. When they do, it’s marked clearly as “Sponsored” and shown in its own section, apart from the earned ranking below it. Paying for a sponsored slot never changes where a business sits in the actual rankings.

Malaysia Homestay Guide is also a comparison resource that generates enquiries for local providers. When you ask to be matched, we pass your enquiry to providers relevant to your request and may receive a referral fee for doing so. That arrangement, like sponsorship, never touches scores or earned rankings; the two systems are kept apart.

Staying current

We refresh listing data on a monthly cycle. Each listing carries a “last verified” stamp so you can see, at a glance, when it was last checked rather than taking freshness on faith.

FAQ

Can a business change its own ranking?
No. A listed business can correct factual details like its address or amenities, but it cannot edit its score, sentiment summary, or ranking position. Those are set by the published rubric and maintained editorially by Janice.
Does sponsorship affect where a homestay ranks?
No. Sponsored placements are labelled and displayed separately from the earned ranking. Paying for a sponsored slot doesn't move a business up the actual rankings.
How often is listing data updated?
Data is refreshed on a monthly cycle, and each listing shows a last verified date so you can see when it was last checked.
