What is a BBQ pit?

A permanent or semi-permanent outdoor cooking structure, typically featuring a grill or fireplace, built into a homestay property for guest use during stays.

A BBQ pit is a dedicated outdoor cooking station installed on a homestay property, usually consisting of a metal grill, fire pit, or combination setup positioned in a garden or entertaining area. In Malaysian homestays, these are marketed as social amenities where guests can gather for shared meals and entertainment during their stay.

The structure itself typically includes a grill grate mounted over a fire chamber, often built from brick or concrete, with an adjacent prep counter or table surface. Many setups are sheltered by a pergola or roof structure to offer protection from rain during the northeast or southwest monsoon seasons.

Homestay hosts usually supply basic essentials like charcoal or firewood, lighter fuel, and cooking utensils (tongs, spatulas, grill brushes). Guests typically bring or arrange their own marinades, seasonings, and protein. Some properties provide pre-marinated meats or meat platters as an add-on service; this varies by location and host. Plates, cutlery, and serving dishes may be borrowed from the main house or supplied separately.

The BBQ pit appeals most to group bookings and multi-day stays where guests want autonomy over meal preparation and a focal point for evening gatherings. It is especially popular in rural and semi-rural properties, and in areas marketed for family retreats or corporate team stays. Villa-style homestays with larger grounds tend to feature more elaborate pits than compact urban properties.
